Working with Families on Estate Planning

Dear Friend,

Our firm has worked with hundreds of families on their estate plans. While these plans vary greatly from family to family, I have noticed trends among families that have successful planning. The traits of these families have enabled them to plan for their own futures as well as the future of their loved ones, bringing a greater sense of well-being and peace of mind to all involved. Don’t get me wrong, there can be speed bumps along the way! But, when a family unites together with a common purpose in mind, the end result is rewarding.

Successful families tend to make following commitments:

  • Cohesion: The family works to build trust, and that trust is rooted in a common moral value. They learn to be candid with one another and give honest feedback. This sometimes tense environment is where a skilled counselor at law can assist, ensuring that all family members’ input is considered and helping to forge a plan with all viewpoints in mind.
  • Stewardship: It is important that all family members build wealth & financial literacy and strive to make financial decisions collaboratively, especially in the case of a family business. All generations need to get involved not just with the planning stages but also the development and execution of plans.
  • Learning: It makes the process infinitely easier if the family enters with an open mind and an open heart. Learning to listen is crucial, even if we don’t agree. We all want to take control of the outcome, but waiting to see how the plan evolves and takes shape is important. Be ready for disagreements and even break downs at times, because this is a learning process.

When these three commitments come together, it makes the creation of a secure and unique family estate plan possible. This is the primary goal of our law firm – to protect you and the ones you love.
The Law Firm of Christopher W. Dumm has been committed to the education of our clients since we opened our doors in 1997. We provide free monthly workshops in our offices and give presentations throughout our community and the four-state area all year. We have a few seats still open for our workshop in early October, and I would like to invite you and your loved ones to attend. These workshops are designed to not only answer your questions about estate planning, but also to make you aware of numerous often unknown options. Please join me to learn more about the asset protection options available to you, or contact our office today to schedule a consultation.
